Mann, Ted

Theodore Mann (May 13, 1924 – February 24, 2012) was an American theatre producer and director and the Artistic Director of the Circle in the Square Theatre School. Mann co-founded Circle in the Square Theatre, widely regarded as the birth of the off-Broadway theatre movement with José Quintero in 1951.

He was elected to The Lambs in 1965 as a Professional member.

Ted Mann produced and/or directed more than 250 productions. In addition to his Broadway and off-Broadway credits, he directed The Turn of the Screw for the New York City Opera, La Boheme for the Julliard School, and The Night of the Iguana for Moscow’s Maly Theater.

Mann received the 1957 Tony Award, for Best Play for Long Day’s Journey Into Night and a 1976 Special Tony Award acknowledging twenty-five continuous years of quality productions at Circle in the Square. He has been nominated for 12 additional Tony Awards and 7 Drama Desk Awards.
