Abbot, Charles

Charles Abbot was an author, composer, and violinist. His professional name was Charlie Abbot.

He was born in Chicago on January 11, 1903, and moved to New York.

Elected a Professional Member of The Lambs in 1942. He was a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, joining in 1945.

Abbot was a script writer for radio shows. In 1941 he gained exposure when his song “As We Walk into the Sunset” was recorded by many of America’s favorite big bands and singers, including the Claude Thornhill Orchestra (w/ Ralph Young on vocals), Jan Savitt and the Top Hatters Orchestra; and a new singer from Nashville discovered by Peter Dean, Dinah Shore.

Abbot’s songs include “Five Salted Peanuts,” “Think of Me Thinking of You,” “If I Were You,” “The Guy from the Isle of Capri.”

Through the years Charlie Abbot handled dozens of chores for the Club, including props for Lambs’ theater productions, and Lambs’ Spring Gambols, associate editor for The Lambs’ Cue Sheet; and soliciting those famous signature ads for The Lambs’ Script holiday issues and Lambs’ Spring Gambol books. He also undertook the task to raise funds for the wonderful gift bags that Santa Claus – sometimes known as Charlie Reynolds or Alec Constant – distributed to orphans and underprivileged children at the annual Christmas parties in the club Grill Room.

A quote from The Lambs’ Cue Sheet of November 1967, “Each month, The Lambs play host to a group of servicemen at a Tuesday Night at The Lambs event. The responsibility falls directly upon the indefatigable Charlie Abbot.”
