Burt, Benjamin Hapgood

Benjamin Hapgood Burt (aka Ben Hapgood) was elected to The Lambs in 1907 as a Theatrical member. He is credited as Performer, Writer, Lyricist and Composer. He was among the founders of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP).

When Benjamin Hapgood Burt was born on 27 June 1875, in Rockingham, Windham, Vermont, his father, Benjamin Hercules Burt, was 44 and his mother, Anna Maria Hapgood, was 38. He married Minnie Adele Bainum on 19 October 1903, in Manhattan. He lived in Rutland, Vermont, in 1880 and Manhattan for about 15 years. In 1900 he joined the Weber and Fields company as an actor. He then turned to writing music.

Burt wrote “Hang Out the Front Door Key” and “The Pig Got Up and Slowly Walked Away.”

He died on 17 September 1950, in Amityville, New York, at the age of 75.
