Edwin Carewe (March 3, 1883–January 22, 1940) was elected to The Lambs in 1916 as a Professional member. He was an actor, film director, film producer, and screenwriter. Carewe was made a Life member.
Carewe was born Jay Fox in 1883 Gainesville, Texas. He studied at the University of Missouri and the University of Texas. He went onstage in his teens. He entered silent pictures as an actor in 1914 but soon turned to directing. Among his best-remembered films were Resurrection, starring Dolores del Rio, Ramona, Revenge, and The Spoilers. Carewe directed 56 films and wrote four screenplays. His daughter, Rita Carewe, appeared in his films.
He was credited with discovering Del Rio, Warner Baxter, Wallace Beery, Francis X. Bushman, Gary Cooper, and many other stars. Edwin Carewe died of heart disease on January 22, 1940, in Hollywood. He was 56 years old. He is interred in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery.
