Gottschalk, Louis F.

Louis Ferdinand Gottschalk (October 7, 1864 – July 15, 1934) was a composer and musical director. He conducted the American premiere of Franz Lehar’s The Merry Widow and many shows for Lambs members.

Gottschalk was elected to The Lambs in 1901 as a professional member.

Gottschalk conducted the premieres of several of shows by Victor Herbert and Reginald De Koven. Both were brother Lambs.

For Edison he conducted recordings of numbers from Lehar’s Gypsy Love with members of the original American cast. He composed the score for The Tik-Tok Man of Oz with book and lyrics by L. Frank Baum. He scored movies for Baum, D. W. Griffith, Charlie Chaplin, Harold Bell Wright, and more.

He died July 16, 1934, in Los Angeles. He was 70. Gottschalk is interred in Angelus Rosedale Cemetery.
