Charles Burke Jefferson (1851-1908) was elected to The Lambs in 1892 as a Theatrical member. He was the oldest son of beloved Lamb Joseph Jefferson. He was born March 20, 1851, in Macon, Georgia, to Jefferson and his first wife, actress Margaret Clements Lockyer (1832–1861). He made his stage debut in the arms of his mother on a Southern tour of “Mr. and Mrs. Peter White.” Charlie played a demon in “Rip Van Winkle” as a kid. By the late 1860s he took over as manager of his father’s career.
In 1874 he married Lauretta Vultee; she died 10 years later. He remarried to actress Edna Carey and had four daughters.
He made at least one short silent film in 1897, The Biggest Fish He Ever Caught. He stopped acting to become the manager of his father’s road company. As Joseph Jefferson aged and could not perform, Charlie put together tours with his younger brothers filling the roles. An 1898-1899 national tour was particularly well known.
Charles Burke Jefferson died June 23, 1908, in New York City. He was 57 years old. He is interred in the family plot in Bay View Cemetery in Sandwich, Massachusetts.
