Montant, Jules A.

Jules A. Montant (1852-1915) served on the Lambs Council for six years, from 1882 to 1887. The date he joined the Lambs is unclear; it was not many years after the incorporation in 1877. He was considered a “Non-Professional” member.

Montant was born March 14, 1852, in Paris. His father, Alphonse Montant, was an American-born auctioneer, and his mother, Eliza, a French citizen. The wealth of the family meant young Jules never had to work.

Montant was also a member of the Union and Metropolitan clubs, and an officer of the New York Yacht Club. In 1889, when he stepped down from The Lambs under Shepherd J. Lester Wallack, Montant married Isabel Gurnee, a daughter of a prominent judge. The couple split their time between New York and Europe, traveling widely, ultimately settling in Paris during the Great War.

Jules A. Montant died in Paris on June 1, 1915. He was 63 years old. Montant left his widow his estate, and bequeathed a favorite painting, of the racehorse Atalanta by Alfred de Dreux, to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
