A Q&A with Gary Shapiro and Linda Purl (2-25-19):

What kind of work do you do and what projects/shows are you presently working on?
My musical director is the very brilliant Tedd Firth. I get to do a concert with him about once a month. Next up for us in the city is May 18 at the  Beach Cafe. We’ve taken baby steps toward our next CD to be called Try Your Wings. A recurring passion for me is to perform Joan Didion’s extraordinary The Year of Magical Thinking. Always a privilege to say her words.

What do you like most about being in the arts?
Connection is the word that comes to mind. Connection to the audience, to ideas big and small, hopefully connection to inspiration and fresh, better views.

When was your first interest in the arts?
Childhood playtime. Sounds silly, I’m sure but having watched my own kids now through their flights of fancy as they played in the back yard that feels about right. I watched them create story lines, act out battles, become aliens and heroes, storm imaginary castles…all with a front row seat. Heaven!

What has been your most memorable experience in the arts?
Impossible to say but one of tremendous privilege was working with the great Julie Harris. I got to do two plays with her. Not only, of course, was she a great actress but the humanity of that woman was and remains humbling. She felt everything and translated her great depth of feeling into her art.

How did you learn about the Lambs?
Through my pal, Magda Katz. She told me to join…and so, happily, I did

What hobbies or interests do you have outside of work?
Travel…long bucket list yet to fulfill. Pretty much anything out of doors…hiking, skiing, biking, sailing…invites or opportunities to do any of those rarely go untaken.

Linda resigned from The Lambs in 2021.
