Waldrop, Uda

Uda Waldrop (1885-1951) was elected to The Lambs in 1918 as a professional member. He was an internationally famed organist, born in Berryville, Arkansas, March 20, 1885. He studied in London and by 1911 he had won international fame in music circles as the accompanist for the Russian singer Reinhold von Warlich.

Waldrop was the official organist for the City of San Francisco in 1921 and for the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in 1926, positions which he still held at the time of his death. He had the position as organist at the First Unitarian, St. Luke’s Episcopal and First Congregational Church, all in San Francisco. He made several professional tours in Europe and was a prolific composer.

He was a member of the Bohemian Club and was awarded an honorary degree from the University of San Francisco. In addition, he was an honorary life member of the Musician’s Union of San Francisco.

In his mid-sixties, Waldrop was suffering from a growth on his throat. He threw himself off a cliff near his home and died from his injuries on June 8, 1951. He was 66. His cremains are placed in the San Francisco Columbarium.
